Kagbhusandi Lake trek has lately garnered a lot of attention amongst the famous trekking sites. It is located at an elevation of 4345 m. above the sea level, in the Badrinath Region of the Garhwal District. Kagbhusandi Lake is the major highlight of this trek.

There are two ways to approach this beautiful lake, one from Bhyundar village and the other one is from Vishnu Prayag. We trek from Govind ghat to Bhyundar Village to Roop Dhungi to Simartoli to Rajkharak to Kagbhusandi to Gounchha Udiyar to Painka and back to Govind ghat.

The best time for trekking in Garhwal is during summers, from June to October. The difficulty level of the trek is moderate.

Itinerary List

Day 1: Arrive at Govind ghat (1828 m.)

Kagbhusandi Lake trek begins at Govindghat, which is at the height of 1,828 m. Govind ghat is located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. This place is a base for many camp sites. To reach Govindghat, Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the closest airport situated at a distance of approximately 292 km. Rishikesh railway station is the closest railway junction which is about 273 km. away. Govind ghat is well-connected by road as well. You can come from Joshimath (via NH 58) which is 22 km. away.Once you reach Govindghat, get in touch with our team and they will guide you towards your arranged accommodation for an overnight stay.

Day 2: Trek from Govind ghatto Bhyundar Village to RoopDhungi (1828 m., 12 km.)

Have breakfast and start trekking towards Bhyundar village, the starting point of the trek to Kagbhusandi Lake. The total distance that we are going to cover today is 12 km. The trek path is little longer but easier in gradient. Though there is steep climbing for the first hour of the trek, but later it is an easy trek. While trekking from Bhyundar village to Roop Dhungi, you come across rocky areas, glaciers, shrubs, rivers, etc. Trekkers have to walk on boulders and glacial moraines till they reach the Lake. Enjoy the sounds of gushing water of River Alaknanda, while you move forward. Trek from Bhyundar village passes through dense bear-infested forests. During the trekking route, you get tosee Rhododendron forest and Haathi Parvat. After a long day, have overnight stay in a makeshift tent at RoopDhungi.

Day 3: Trek from Roop Dhungi to Simartoli to Rajkharak (14 km.)

Post breakfast, we move from Roop Dhungi to Simartoli, and later to Raj kharak. The total distance that we are going to cover today is 14 km. The entire path is beautiful and soothing to eyes. The journey allows you to get enchanted by the majestic view of colorful flowers all across the path and snow clad mountains in the background. While on the route, we pass by many small areas like Kargil, Simartoli, Bankbara, Dang khark, Raj khark, etc. They are beautiful campsites for trekkers. A lot of shepherds use this area as pastureland to graze their livestock. After the tiring day, take rest in a makeshift tent at Raj kharak.

Day 4: Trek from Rajkharak to Kagbhushandi (5300 m., 8 km.)

Your wait is finally over as we reach day 4, the most exciting day of Kagbhusandi Lake trek. Today we head from Raj kharak to Kagbhusandi (5300 m.) which is an 8 km. patch. The initial path to the lake is through green valley and meadows, later followed by climbing the boulders. However, the instant thought of the mesmerizing lake will keep you going through all the tough routes.

Trekkers come across wildlife especially bears while trekking to Kagbhusandi. On the way, you come across beautiful views of Neelkanth (6596 m.), Hathi Peak (6727 m.), Ghodi Parvat (6590 m.), Chaukhamba and Nar-Narayan Peaks. There is the wide variety of Himalayan flora and fauna in the valley. You can witness Brahma kamal, Myriad, Fen kamal and many more flowers. Once you reach the lake, you will be awestruck by the beauty of nature. The sacred lake is 500 m. long and 250 m. wide. It is one of the high altitude lakes in the Himalayan region. It is surrounded by huge snow-clad peaks, which enhances its beauty several times. During the month of July to September, you can see the entire lake is decorated with wild, colorful and high altitude flowers. After having a great day, your overnight stay is in a makeshift tent at Kagbhusandi.

Day 5: Trek from Kagbhusandi to Gounchha Udiyar (8 km.)

On day 5, we continue the trek from Kagbhusandi to Gounchha Udiyar. The entire 8 km. stretch is covered by sprawling green meadows, gushing streams, lofty panoramic view, and alpine forest. So don’t forget to take pictures here and preserve the lovely memories of the trek. This trek is a visual treat to the eyes. On the route, you can witness the lifestyle of tribal villagers who are living a nomadic life here. Get to learn their culture, their lifestyle, have a meal with them to know more about the place in the true sense. Take rest after a hectic day at a makeshift tent in Gounchha Udiyar.

Day 6: Trek from Gouncha Udiyar to Painka to Govindghat (10 km. trek and 7 km. Drive)

Have breakfast and get ready for Gouncha Udiyar to Painka trek. After reaching Painka, we head towards Govindghat. We are going to cover this distance with 10 km. trek and 7 km. drive. Painka is a small and beautiful village located in the lap of Garhwal Himalaya. The trek passes through the rocky and narrow path along with dense forests. Trekkers also come across the spring coming from Barmal Peak. The beauty of this place will leave you astonished and you would want to visit here again and again. The blissful walk ends on reaching Govind ghat. Check in at the guest house arranged by us. Enjoy hot dinner and relish the entire evening.

Day 7: Govindghat to Haridwar/ Rishikesh/ Dehradun

Kagbhusandi Lake trek ends here. Have delicious breakfast and later checkout from the guest house. Proceed for your onward journey to Haridwar / Rishikesh / Dehradun.

How To Reach

By Air: The nearest Airport is Jolly Grant Airport which is located around 27 kms from the Dehra Dun city has a daily flight from Delhi to Dehra Dun.

By Train: Dehra Dun railway station, lies in the heart of the city and Haridwar railway station, are well connected by major Indian cities.

By Road: Uttarakhand Transport Corporation and many private transport services provide road connectivity from Dehra Dun, Haridwar and Rishikesh to Govindghat. and also regular bus services are from Delhi to Dehra Dun, Haridwar and Rishikesh from ISBT Kashmere Gate, Delhi.

Cancellation: If a trek is called off at the last moment due to a natural calamity/unforeseen circumstances (like rains, earthquake, landslides, strike, bandh etc), Great Hiking Trails will issue a trek voucher for the full amount. The voucher can be redeemed for the same trek or another trek in the next one year.

The cancellation charges are as under.
Cancellations prior to 30 days from the start of the trek — full refund.
Cancellation between 30 days and 20 days to the start of the trek — 50% refund.
Cancellation less than 20 days to the start of the trek — no refund.
Please note: In case of refund, there will be a deduction of 4% (bank charges) from the total fee you have paid.

 The applicable refund amount will be processed within 10 business days

 The customer receives a confirmation voucher via email within 24 hours of successful booking
 In case the preferred slots are unavailable, an alternate schedule of the customer’s preference will be arranged and a new confirmation voucher will be sent via email.
 Alternatively, the customer may choose to cancel their booking and a full refund will be processed.
